We were living in the Oakland Hills and Di was pregnant with our first child, Isaac. This picture is my icon of her. It is always a good reminder to take time for our marriage.

I’m taking my dear wife on a date today. We are going to drive to a strange place and go exploring. No small feat when you have eight children, ages 4 months to 15! In spite of the obstacles to planning such an excursion, it is important to take time for your marriage.

We don’t do this often enough. Life can be consuming. Although we started this adventure over 16 years ago together, all too often, we forget about us.

I’m sure we are not alone. Life can be like the current of the Mississippi River, taking us downstream, guiding our path, making us passengers of fate. But on days like these, we make a stand. We take time for our marriage. We get out of the current and try to recapture the glory of those wonderful days when our life together was just beginning to rise.

Now, I don’t want to be too melancholy. The fact is, my wife and I follow the stream less than about anyone I know. I wouldn’t trade or go back to anything for the glorious chaos that is our family today! – yet, we can still lose sight of the wonder that began it all. Work, kids, home, church, you name it, from one responsibility to another and where in all of that is time for us?

The fire of love! This was taken on the epic motorcycle trip where we fell in love! Somewhere in Yellowstone.

So I brought out these pictures today to remind me of when love was new, the future seemed limitless, and an epic adventure was just beginning. May the journey continue, may all of our lives be amazing.
